The Center for Studies in Higher Education, established in 1956, is the oldest institute in the U.S. devoted to the study of the systems, institutions and processes of higher education. Research at CSHE is interdisciplinary and  applied, and it concentrates especially on strategic issues. CSHE studies both international issues – with a comparative focus – and regionally relevant issues. The institute lists its current important research topics as follows: Higher education in the digital age; The research university; Science and technology policy and higher education; Policy issues in California higher education; and University of California history.
