Academic success and dropout phenomena

A high academic success rate is an important goal of higher education policy - not only because dropping out of universities can be accompanied by social and individual costs, but also because of the high shortage of skilled workers.

In order to obtain more reliable knowledge on how to improve the success rate in higher education, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published the funding line "Academic success and dropout phenomena" in February 2016.

A second funding line was published in December 2019.

A high success rate in studies with high academic standards is a central goal of education policy and universities. Therefore, the promotion of academic success and the reduction of drop-outs continue to be of high scientific and social relevance even after the publication of the first funding offer on these topics in February 2016

There are many indications that drop-out rates at universities can be influenced. For this reason, the aim is to reduce the dropout rate, which currently stands at around 30% nationwide. In order to obtain more reliable knowledge on how to improve the success rate, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published the funding line "Success and Dropout" in February 2016.
