Master of Science Communication

Through academic and practical components, students in this course are encouraged to develop their creative and imaginative abilities, and to produce ideas and undertake work that will communicate science, technology and medicine in fresh and effective ways. The teaching of this course will mainly be held by Science Communication group members but will also include seminars of industry professionals. Due to the central location in London, there is access to many media and science organizations as well as a multitude of cultural events and workshops. This facilitates building networks of contacts for the students..

Aims of the Study Program

This course aims to prepare students for a wide range of professional science communication careers in print, broadcast and new media journalism, science policy, public relations, exhibition and design work. It shall develop their skills in technical practice in several communication areas through a program of practical options.

Topics/Content

Academic and practical components provide a broad overview of the professional science communication landscape. The study program focuses on communication sciences, technology and medicines and provides the students with an overall knowledge of how to lead and influence communication in those areas.

Curriculum

The following core modules are taken by all students on the course. They provide a solid grounding in the chosen subject.

• Core practical
• Creative group project
• Media representation of science
• Science and its social contexts

In term two students choose three academic option modules each lasting half a term. In addition, they undertake a group project module.
In term three students choose two practical option modules. In this term, students also start work on their dissertations.

Time to complete

You can choose to study this master program full time (1 year) or part time (2 years).

Requirements and admission

Candidates normally require at least a lower second class honors degree from a UK (or overseas equivalent) university or college of higher education in a scientific or science-related subject, and must be able to demonstrate their potential as a science communicator, as judged by the completion of an aptitude assignment. Candidates may also submit portfolios of communication work that they have undertaken. Candidates with other qualifications are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate relevant experience or aptitude.

Prospective students should apply from November of the year before they wish to be admitted. Students must apply online. In addition they must complete an aptitude assignment (PDF, , Datei ist nicht barrierefrei) specific to the course for which they are applying - this should be attached along with your personal statement, under the 'personal statement' section of the online application form.

Applications are welcomed from both new graduates and those with postgraduate research or work experience of all kinds.
