Due to the important role research and innovation play for growth and sustainable development, fundamental transition processes are taking place in the systems of research, innovation and higher education in Europe, as in other regions of the world. But all these changes will fail if there are no managers, administrators, policy-makers and researchers who are able to deal with them successfully. Furthermore, it is of major importance to analyze the changes in their regional and national contexts.

Therefore, the master course “Research and Innovation in Higher Education” (MARIHE) embraces the global dimension of innovation systems, research and education and orients the students to understand and study higher education with a special attention to the knowledge triangle and knowledge alliances (business-university partnerships).

MARIHE is supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union under the action of a Joint Master Degree.

Aims of the Study Programme

The programme description of MARIHE specifies ten learning outcomes. These learning outcomes include, among others,

have a sound understanding of the new contexts relevant to research and innovation in higher education (system knowledge combined with global and regional contexts),
understand the specialties of scientific institutions and how to adapt marketization and deregulation instruments to the needs and the culture of the institutions,
are competent in policy analysis and evaluation, have developed skills to link system change with institutional change and implementation of change in different contexts,
demonstrate also the ability to use research and research management skills and analytical methodologies appropriately and have the potential to move to doctoral studies, and
develop management skills to deal with the changing environment inside HE and research institutions.

Curriculum/Content

The curriculum of MARIHE reflects on three perspectives on the change logics involved in the worldwide developments in higher education and in higher education institutions:

the perspective on Systems in Transition, focussing on general developments and on globalization and regionalization (Europe, Africa, Americas, Asia) in higher education
the perspective on System-Institution-Interaction (e.g. funding of research and innovation)
the perspective on Institutional Change (e.g. change management in higher education).

Furthermore, modules on Theoretical Background introduce fundamental issues of higher education management. Another emphasis is given to Transferable Skills (e.g. research methods, presentation skills, languages).

After the first semester (foundation) at Danube University Krems and the second semester (orientation) at University of Tampere, an internship of min. 8 weeks is mandatory (worldwide), as well as an 8-week fieldtrip to either China (Beijing Normal University) or India (LM Thapar School of Management). Then, one of the four specializations can be chosen:

  • Research and Innovation (University of Tampere)
  • Leadership and Change (University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück)
  • Institutional Research (Danube University Krems)
  • Learning and Teaching (Eötvös Loránd University).

Through the mobility scheme in MARIHE, students have access to variety of expertise and different types of institutions, as well as authentic contact with diverse national and cultural contexts.

Requirements and Admission

Applicants to the MARIHE programme

must hold a first university degree. This should be at least a Bachelor degree issued by a university, quantified as three years of studies corresponding to 180 ECTS,
show a strong motivation and interest for the content of the study programme,
have sufficient knowledge of English for academic purposes

Target Group/Students

The programme addresses students with a first university degree with a strong interest to work in the field of (management of) research and innovation in higher education. It aims at preparing future HE managers, policy makers, analysts, researchers and consultants.

December before year of intake for scholarship applicants; May in year of intake for self-paying applicants (may be subject to changes)
